I finally finished NIGHT FILM while I was on vacation. So that's what I'm reviewing today. And oh man...
NIGHT FILM by Marisha Pessl
Everybody has a Cordova story. Cult horror director Stanislas Cordova hasn't been seen in public since 1977. To his fans he is an engima. To journalist Scott McGrath he is the enemy. To Ashley he was a father.
On a damp October night the body of young, beautiful Ashley Cordova is found in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Her suicide appears to be the latest tragedy to hit a severely cursed dynasty.
For McGrath, another death connected to the legendary director seems more than a coincidence. Driven by revenge, curiosity and a need for the truth, he finds himself pulled into a hypnotic, disorientating world, where almost everyone seems afraid.
The last time McGrath got close to exposing Cordova, he lost his marriage and his career. This time he could lose his grip on reality.
ONCE WE FACE OUR DEEPEST FEARS, WHAT LIES ON THE OTHER SIDE?
Summary: (No spoilers)
This is a realllllllly hard one to summarize. It's long, it's complicated, it's intricately potted and written.
But here are the basics: the director Cordova is surrounded in mystery and doubt. He has a cult-ish following. And bad things seem to happen in his life, and those he loves. When his daughter dies, an apparent suicide, the investigative reported, McGrath, is driven to begin investigating the mysterious man again.
McGrath goes on a crazy journey full of twists and turns that just shock the hell out of the reader... forcing the pages to turn, almost on their own.
I swear you won't want to go to sleep. You'll just want to keep reading until you finish the SUPER thick novel.
I was creeped out. I never wanted to stop reading, even what I had to because I was on vacation and had to spend some time with the hubbs. I loved the characters. I loved the plot. I loved the twists and then ambiguity of the ending.
I have so few words to be able to talk about this one adequately. I can't do it justice.
Yes! Absolutely yes. I love this book! I give it a 5 out of 5 stars, and it's one of my new favorites. If I could write a book this good then I would die happy.
Seriously. READ IT!
If you like thrillers, creepy reads, mysteries, stories that take place in New York, good twisting plots, well written characters... if you like reading, then read NIGHT FILM. Do it.
