I have decided that being a beta reader has improved my own writing. When reading I have noticed mistakes that I tend to make, and now I tend to make them less since I am more aware.
I have found that my dialogue can be lacking. With beta reading I find dialogue that I love, and some I don't, but both help me to figure out how to write my own dialogue better. I take tips from the dialogue I love, and try not to mimick the ones I don't.
I have also found some absolutely amazing friends and critique partners through the beta reading process! I started with an offer to just read, but since we are both writers in these cases we decided to just share in general and be CPs. I adore the writing community and I feel so supported while I am also improving my craft. My partners are so wonderful, and I am lucky to have found the friends I have!
With all of this success I am thinking a bit more about possibly starting an online masters program for English and creative writing combined. I haven't completely decided, but I am thinking about it. Either way I sincerely enjoy reading, writing, and everything that has to do with either! I want to continue to improve and stay motivated.
To ensure that I stay on track I plan to participate in NaNoWriMo as well as work with my CPs.
Thus tonight, and lots of this week, will be spent finishing the two novels I am beta reading. Only when I am finished I can write more (and maybe contine with my amazing motivation and progress like I had this weekend!)
Cross your fingers for me, and feel free to cheerlead me with encouragement :)
